Just last week I posted a lovely photo on my Facebook page of a breakfast nook decorated with very cool color furnishings and decor.  A friend had mentioned to me that she thought cool colors are more in style at the moment, while warmer colors are on their way out.  I tend towards cool colors, so I didn’t argue with her 🙂 And after asking for opinions on my FB page, many people seemed to agree.
So I was confused then when all I seemed to spot at last weekend’s flea market was RED furniture and decor! There were no cool colors in sight! Â Every time I turned a corner, I came upon another red display.
I mentioned my confusion to one of my favorite dealers at the market, and she confessed that whether it’s in style or not, she absolutely adores red.
So I’m wondering now, what do you think of red in terms of decor?
I took a minute to look through Pinterest to see what red inspiration may be out there, and here is a little of what I saw.

In these spaces red is used as an accent . . . most of the color scheme is very neutral, with the bold red acting as a statement piece.
Major companies are producing some of their furnishings in red, like this iron bed from Anthropologie,
Anthropologie
and bedside table from Ethan Allen.

One of my favorite recent furniture makeovers is a red piece from Linda @ Q is for Quandie.
The red and turquoise contrast is gorgeous (the turquoise is a fantastic Fusion Mineral Paint color called Laurentien, FYI).
So what do you think? Â Is red in or out? Â Is it a timeless color? Â Or do you just say the heck with it and use whatever colors you like, whether they are in style or not?

I love red, but I have to say that I only have the smallest touches of it in my own decor at the moment. Once upon a time I went so far as to paint the walls red in my living room! Remember when that was in? Yikes! But I do think it is a classic and will always be ‘in style’, just used in different ways (maybe a tad more subtle these days). Thanks for the shout out for my trash to treasure dresser!
I love color! I pay no attention to the “in” colors, as declared by Pantone or any other company. If you want your door to be red, orange, white, green, blue, or pink just paint it and enjoy it. I don’t think it’s a good idea to paint antique furniture made from beautiful wood, but if you pick up an old pine bookcase at a garage sale (I’ve found a couple), then paint it whatever color you want! Don’t let commercial companies dictate what colors you use in your own home! Do you really care what’s “in” or “out”?
I love the examples of red you shared. I think red done well is always in style. After thinking about this, I think you have good instincts for a piece of furniture and choose colors that work best for that piece. In this case, cohension and style win over trend colors. But, that’s just my two cents.
The only advantage I’ve found of using a trendy colour or motif is that it’s easier to find. I think red continues to be popular because it punctuates gray and white so well.
i think “in” is just a way to sell products and i think cool colors will always be “in” accent with red or green or purple with orange polka dots is purely up to whatever you like. if you want to be trendy and have the budget to change things every three months more power to you lol it’s not for me i think you have a good eye melanie and always make beautiful things so do what you feel is right xx
I LOVE red- always have, always will!! I think you should use whatever colors you like, whether or not they are in or not 🙂
IMO, the examples shown are why red will always be a classic–provided it’s used sparingly–think LBD and red lips! 😀 And red furniture sells! I took a risk and painted a pair of nightstands a pale yellow–they sat and sat. I repainted them red and they were gone the next day!
Why must something be trendy in order to like it? People like what they like, on trend or not.
