Etsy Selling Basics

Before we get into the list of items, let’s talk basics for anyone who may be new to selling online.

If you’ve been selling vintage at flea markets, antique malls, or booths, opening a shop on Etsy can feel intimidating. But it’s actually one of the easiest platforms to start on, especially for vintage sellers.

Etsy will collect and process payments for you, and charge the appropriate sales tax to the buyer. They also pay in the collected sales tax to each state, so that’s all taken care of.

Etsy makes shipping easy also. You can charge customers for the shipping cost of your items and purchase discounted shipping labels right there on Etsy (or set up a free Pirate Ship account). Just print off, tape to the box, and you’re done!

For getting started online, it’s a great first step.

You don’t need a massive inventory, a perfect brand, or professional photography to begin on Etsy. You just need a clear understanding of how Etsy works and what it expects from sellers.

Here are a few points to consider when opening an Etsy shop:

1. Etsy Is Great for Vintage—But There’s a Rule

To sell something as vintage on Etsy, it must be at least 20 years old.

If it’s newer than that, it still may be allowed, but it must fall under handmade or craft supplies. Many items in this list will qualify as supplies, which gives you flexibility.

2. You Don’t Need a “Perfect” Shop to Start

Your first goal isn’t a beautiful, fully built-out storefront, but rather just to be seen by customers.

Like any online platform, Etsy has an algorithm that runs its search results. To have your shop and items show up in Etsy search, you need to build some momentum with the algorithm.

My suggestion is to start with a simple shop name, header photo, and a short “About” section. Then commit to getting 5-10 listings in your shop.

All it really takes is for one good listing to take off! But the more items you list, the more likely you are to keep the algorithm happy.

You can refine photos, descriptions, and branding as you go.

3. Clear Photos Matter More Than Styling

For Etsy buyers, clarity in what you’re selling is very important. Your photos need to detail exactly what your customers will get in their purchase.

Make sure your photos show your items true colors, condition (any any issues or flaws) and scale (a hand, coin, or ruler included in the photo helps).

4. Descriptions Build Trust (and Reduce Returns)

I try to remind myself that people are busy, and often just scan over an item when online shopping. That’s why your listing description needs to be very clear and easy to understand.

Every listing description should detail:

  • What the item is

  • How old is it (or estimated age)

  • What condition is it in

  • How might someone use it

  • And exactly what is included (multiple, a pair, or just one)

Over-explaining is better than under-explaining. This will also help protect you in case the customer files a case with Etsy.

5. Small, Lightweight Items Are Ideal When Starting

If you’re just starting out with shipping items, it can feel pretty overwhelming. That’s why I suggest starting with things that are not breakable, smaller than 12″ square, and lightweight.

Small, light, and durable items cost less to ship, are easier to pack, and create fewer headaches.

Many of the items below are perfect starter inventory.

6. Pricing Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

You don’t need to stress out over finding the perfect price on day one. Start with your item cost and look at what comparable items are selling for on the platform.

It’s important to note that on top of the cost of your item, you can expect Etsy to take about 12% in fees with each sale. Resist the temptation to price your item too cheap, or you may walk away with little to no profit.

Once your shop gets going, you can always fine tune your prices and shipping rates after you better understand your true costs better.

Final Thoughts on Niche Etsy Selling

If there’s one thing Etsy teaches us, it’s this: Someone is searching for the exact thing you almost left behind.

The magic isn’t always in the big furniture or statement antique pieces. Often, it’s in the small, overlooked items that carry age, texture, and story.

If you start seeing trying to sell items through that lens, your sourcing game changes completely.

Most of these items are inexpensive to gather. Especially if you’re new to the reselling game, why not pick one to try?
